History of the award
Jeanette Spurlock, a founding member of the Field Spaniel Society of America and a retired AKC Field Spaniel breed and obedience judge, bred Field Spaniels under the “Featherfield” kennel name. Over the years she held multiple club offices, served on a variety of committees, and was elected a life member of the FSSA. In 1998, Jeanette wanted to give something back to the members of the FSSA. She sponsored and initiated the “Panchibo” award pin program. The pin is named for two Field Spaniels that were special to Jeanette: CH Kare-Dawn’s Pancho Gonzales CD and his son CH Bilbo Baggins CD.
Panchibo Pin Recognition System
FSSA members who earn an AKC conformation or performance title with their Field Spaniel are awarded an appropriately colored “Panchibo” pin. In addition to the Panchibo pins, the FSSA also offers other pins to recognize Field Spaniel achievements not covered by the Panchibo pin. For instance, dogs earning Versatility titles earn a star pin for each level of versatility and Champion Trackers earn a Field Spaniel profile pin. One pin is issued per dog.
The timing of the distribution of awards is generally during the annual banquet of the FSSA held in conjunction with the annual national specialty show except in those years in which the timing of the specialty means that earlier distribution is preferable. During these years, a petition for earlier mailing of the awards may be made to the Board of Directors at the discretion of the Panchibo Pin Chairperson and the awards are subsequently mailed if such distribution is approved.
